Day One – Video Storytelling

We open by asking students what we can each do to leave our world better. Following this discussion, we announce to ecstatic students that they’ll be composting with worms, planting seeds, and harvesting food over the course of the program. And on top of that, they will be directing, shooting and starring in a documentary about their experience in the program.

“Today we’re going to teach you the basics of video storytelling!”

We ask students to draw what they imagine the school’s garden will look like. What kind of plants will be in the garden? As they draw, kids take turns filming the 6 basic shots of one another: Close Up on the Action, Close Up on the Face, Wide Shot, Over-the-Shoulder Shot, Medium Shot and Experimental Shot.
